Message from Our Superintendent
Superintendent’s Message: October 2025
Dear Students, Families, and Staff of the Tolleson Union High School District,
As we welcome and enjoy the cooler temperatures during the month of October, I want to extend my sincerest wishes to all of our Tolleson Union High School District families. The holidays will be upon us in just a few short months, and I am excited for the many celebrations and opportunities for togetherness ahead. The arrival of fall in Arizona not only brings a welcome change in the weather, it also provides several exciting updates and important reminders for our school community.
Fall Break: A Time to Rest and Recharge
Please remember that our schools will be closed for fall break during the week of October 6. This is a wonderful opportunity for students and staff alike to relax, spend quality time with loved ones, and return refreshed for the remainder of the month. I encourage everyone to take time to enjoy the beautiful Arizona fall weather and get out to the Arizona State Fair or any of the various festivals that take place during the month of October.
I don’t have to tell you that September was a busy and inspiring month for our district! We kicked off the month with Commitment Day 2025, where staff, families, business partners, colleges/universities and military institutions came together in a show of support for all of the opportunities that are available for our seniors. The enthusiasm and unity displayed during this event set a positive tone for the year ahead.
Most recently, our district held a day-long Professional Development Day which provided invaluable learning opportunities for our teachers and staff. Through collaborative workshops and training sessions, our teachers, staff and administrators gained new strategies and insights to better support our students’ learning and well-being. We are grateful for their ongoing commitment to professional growth and student success. The highlight of PD Day was our keynote speaker, Anthony Robles, NCAA Champion Wrestler from Arizona State University, who despite missing his right leg, was able to persevere and truly embody the concept of being unstoppable, the more than apt theme for our Professional Development Day.
Looking Ahead: Bond and Override Election – November 4
As we look to the near future, I want to remind everyone about the upcoming Bond and Override Election on Tuesday, November 4. This election presents two critical issues for our district:
- Bond Issue: The bond proposal seeks funding for essential facility improvements, safety enhancements, updated technology, and the construction or renovation of school buildings. These funds will support school-based projects and transportation.
- Override Issue: The override measure would provide additional operational funding to maintain and expand academic programs, retain high-quality teachers, and keep class sizes manageable. This is a continuation of the existing 15% override that will provide approximately $16.2 million to our school system over the course of the next several years.
I encourage everyone to learn more about these issues and make your voice heard at the polls on November 4.
Thank you for your continued partnership and support. Wishing you all a restful fall break and a wonderful October!
With gratitude,
Jeremy Calles
