English Acquisition Program

The goal of Tolleson Union High School District’s language program is to develop English language skills to proficiency, using the Structured English Immersion model, to ensure students are able to succeed in an all-English academic environment and achieve their goals of graduation from high school and success in the future.

Structured English Immersion (SEI) Program

If students receive composite scores that are below the Proficient Level on the Arizona English Language Learner Assessment (AZELLA) state assessment, we place them in the Sheltered English Instruction (SEI) program.

The objective of the SEI classroom is to teach specific identified skills within the English Language Proficiency Standards (ELPS) appropriate for the English proficiency levels of the students in the class. We divide instruction within the block into four time allocations, focusing on oral English/conversation, reading, writing, and grammar, with instruction driven by each particular domain as aligned to ELPS and English Language Arts Standards.

Parents play a key role in their children’s education. We inform parents of all available instructional services and contact them when we determine a need for their student’s successful academic achievement.

The English Acquisition Program understands that success is driven by teamwork. To that end, our staff is committed to building relationships between program staff, teachers, students, parents, and the communities we serve. As a team, we will help students achieve English proficiency, graduate from high school, and prepare for success in college and/or career training.

World Language: Cultivating Cultural Responsiveness and Biliteracy

Our World Language program celebrates linguistic diversity and champions cultural responsiveness as the foundation of effective, inclusive teaching. We offer courses in French, Mandarin, and Spanish, empowering students to develop proficiency in a second language while deepening their understanding of global perspectives. Through culturally responsive pedagogy, we integrate students’ home languages, cultural knowledge, and lived experiences into every lesson—fostering both academic rigor and cross-cultural empathy.

Central to our mission is the Seal of Biliteracy, an esteemed credential that recognizes students who achieve high proficiency in English and at least one additional language. This recognition not only validates students’ language skills and cultural identities but also enhances their college, career, and scholarship opportunities.

By encouraging biliteracy, we affirm students’ linguistic assets and nurture global citizens equipped for success in an interconnected world. Our curriculum supports literacy development in multiple languages, strengthens cognitive flexibility, and inspires students to embrace the value of communication across cultures.
