Superintendent’s Message: December 2025

Dear Students, Families, Staff, and Community Members of the Tolleson Union High School District,
Imagine yourself standing on a beach, and you suddenly decide that you are just going to start swimming out into the ocean to see how far you can go. You swim for 30 minutes solid, and then you look up, and there is still nothing but blue water in front of you. You swim for another hour and then look up, and it looks the same. As you continue to look up, it just seems like you aren’t making any progress because there is so much blue water in front of you. Then you look back, and you are so far from the beach that you can barely see any of the people who are standing there. That is the importance of reflection, and December is the perfect month to reflect on how far you have come.
When we look at the possibilities for how great our education system could be, then they are endless. There are certainly major milestones like having all A-rated schools or being recognized as the best education system in Arizona. Those goals sit like islands in the ocean that we know we can reach. However, even when we reach those destinations, there will still be so much more we can do for our students. When we reflect, then we can see how far we have come. Last year was the first time in the history of the district that we have two schools receiving the highest label rating from the state when West Point High School became an A-rated school. Last year also marked only the second time in the district’s history that all our schools had earned one of the top two labels by having only A and B-rated schools. Then this year, we improved even further by having La Joya Community High School achieve its A while all our other schools maintained their respective A or B label.
We are in our second year of Unified Sports and our first year moving them into AIA competition. The West Point Dragons Unified flag football team made history when they took home the AIA State Championship in November! They crushed Valley Vista High School with a score of 44-6. We are so proud of our Unified Sports program and this first-ever Unified championship for our district. I’m sure it will be the first of many.
It is my hope that you all will have a chance to come out to an athletic event, a performance, or another activity and just feel the energy from the positive impacts we are making in the lives of our students. For a moment, don’t look at the scoreboard or keep track of how much time your student spends in the spotlight. Just look at the number of participants, the quality of the venue, and the equipment that is used, and picture the preparation that was put into the event. Our students are getting opportunities and experiences that are second to none in the state of Arizona, and that is a true blessing.
On behalf of the entire school district, I wish you a safe, happy holiday season and a wonderful start to the new year.
Warm regards,
Jeremy Calles
