TUHSD Indian Education

Overview: The Office of Indian Education administers federal and state grants to meet the educational and cultural needs of participating high school districts. Our district office receives and provides resources through the allocation of these grants for our Native American students and facilitates the Superintendent of Public Instruction’s initiatives to benefit academic achievement and cultural awareness of Arizona’s indigenous youth.

TUHSD’s Role: Two federal funding sources compromise the Indian Education Program. Title VI and Johnson O'Malley (JOM). The intention is to meet the unique academic and cultural needs of Native American students.

Collaboration with parent advisory committees implements the program, composed of parents/guardians of Native American (NA) students, a teacher representative, and a secondary student. They apprise the district in the direction and implementation of these funds.

Eligibility Requirements

To be eligible for Title VI and/or JOM, the student must be Native American and enrolled in the Tolleson Union High School District.

The student must have appropriate forms on file in the district office.

  • Title VI: These forms are for all Native American students enrolled in the TUHSD. You must complete all portions of the form in order to be eligible for services.

Parent Involvement

Both Johnson O’Malley and Title VI require TUHSD have a parent committee in place. The Indian Education Parent Committees approve the school years planned budget/grant Application and assist in preparing for events such as the annual cultural event.

The TUHSD Indian Education host several meetings and events throughout the school year. Contact your site Indian Education Coordinator for more information!
