AIMS and Stanford 10 Testing for 2009-2010

The AIMS and TerraNova (Stanford 10 starting in spring 2010) tests were administered in the spring of 2009, and reflect two of the assessment pieces being used to evaluate progress in the Arizona State Standards. Student test results were mailed to parents of students in the District during June 2009. We encourage parents and students to discuss these results between themselves and with school personnel. We applaud the hard work demonstrated by the students on these difficult tests. Their scores are viewed as a personal reflection of their progress, and also as a combined indication of our district's instructional programs.

The following outlines the State and District testing programs for the 2009-2010 school year.

GRADUATION REQUIREMENT FOR CLASS OF 2006 AND BEYOND

Students in the Class of 2006 were the first high school class required to pass the Reading, Writing, and Mathematics portion of AIMS to earn a high school diploma. The students of all graduating classes after 2006 are also required to pass the AIMS tests identified above to earn a high school diploma.

STANFORD 10

The State Board of Education has mandated the Stanford 10 (previously TerraNova) testing of all students in grades 2 and 9. The Stanford 10 will be administered to all Tolleson Union High School District 9th grade students on April 14, 2010.

Arizona's Assessment program has undergone several changes in recent years, however the importance of these tests must be stressed. While Tolleson Union High School District strives to use test results prudently as merely one element in a multiple-assessment approach, student scores from both the AIMS and Stanford 10 are very important. These scores are used at both state and national levels in order for the District to qualify for programs/grants and as an indication of academic strengths and weaknesses within the District. Students and parents should take these tests seriously and strive to achieve the best results possible. Our teachers and schools will continue to reinforce the importance of these tests in their instructional programs.

Questions concerning district and state testing should be directed to Dennis Dowling, Director of Student Achievement. He can be reached at (623) 478-4022. Thank you.
