In December 2010, the Tolleson Union High School District was one of 14 school districts in Arizona to be awarded the AZ Safe and Supportive Schools Grant (S3). The grant’s focus will target implementing prevention/intervention programs that address school community needs with an emphasis on reducing reported bullying and substance abuse incidents on our school campuses.
As a result of the grant, we will achieve the following goals by September 30, 2014:
Goal 1 – Improve conditions for learning in eligible schools by utilizing valid and reliable data to drive the use of research-based prevention and intervention strategies.
Goal 2 – Reduce high-risk student behaviors that present barriers to learning in eligible schools by using valid and reliable data to drive prevention and intervention strategies.
In accordance with S3 grant guidance, the Arizona Department of Education will identify two TUHSD schools by July 31, 2011 to be target implementation sites. Please continue to visit our site for updated announcements on the school selection decision.
Tolleson Union High School District is dedicated to the success of the S3 grant initiative and to assisting our school communities in the implementation process. We look forward to actively involving and providing resources to support all stakeholders in the S3 Initiative process; community members, parents, school staff, and students.
Opportunities for involvement include:
- Informational Sessions: As school selection is finalized, selected sites will hold informational meetings to introduce an overview of the S3 grant and obtain feedback for planning. Please visit our website and look out for S3 school selection announcements in the months to come.
- School Site Teams: Each selection school site will establish teams to focus on S3 planning. We will be looking for parents, school staff, and students to be involved in the process.
- Surveying: Collecting feedback from all stakeholders is essential to understanding the experiences and perceptions that the TUHSD community has with our school. Thank you for all the parents, school staff members, and students that participated in S3 surveying this year! We look forward to your continued feedback.
Please feel free to contact our District Prevention Coordinator with questions, feedback, or to find out how you can be involved.
