Message from our Superintendent

Why is it that September in Arizona still feels like summer? September everywhere else seems to signal the start of the fall season, but not here in the desert! As we enter the second month of the school year, there are some important events coming up that could have a major impact on TUHSD. As superintendent, I would be remiss if I did not share with you some important facts about our upcoming budget override and why it is important for parents and students of voting age to make their voices heard.

First and foremost, November 8, 2016, will be an important election because that is when we as a nation will go to the polls and elect a new leader for our great nation. For that reason alone, there should be a large turnout of voters for this election. But it is also important to note that the Tolleson Union High School District is going for a budget override at the same time. That said, here are some facts that you should know about this election.

Overrides are used to provide additional funding to support what happens inside the classroom, including teaching and learning. Residents across the Tolleson Union High School District boundary, from the cities of Avondale, Phoenix, Glendale, and Tolleson, will have the opportunity to vote on a budget override during the November 8, 2016 election. If the override passes, the funds will be used to continue funding support for our students with Honors and AP classes; to provide intervention for students who need additional support; to have dual enrollment opportunities which allow students to gain college credit while still taking classes in high school; to keep class sizes down for more manageable instruction and attention by teachers; for recruitment and retention of Highly Qualified Teachers; and finally to increase student achievement across the board.

As you can see, the presidential election won’t be the only important thing to vote on November 8. If you haven’t registered to vote yet, please register now.

As superintendent of the Tolleson Union High School District, I take the education of your students very seriously. Student achievement will be the utmost priority for me. I look forward to working with parents, teachers, students, and the entire community to ensure that TUHSD students are ready for college, for career, and for success in their future endeavors.
