Message from our Superintendent

It’s finally starting to feel like fall here in the desert. With the cooler weather a host of wonderful celebrations start to take place, giving families an opportunity to go out and enjoy the outdoors. The Arizona State Fair takes place each year in October. Our students and teachers will be taking some time to enjoy fall break on October 10 through the 14. Fall also means that the holidays are just around the corner! Before you know it, the Paseo de Luces will be here. And of course, Thanksgiving is just next month.

While I am getting used to my surroundings as superintendent, I want to reiterate how much Tolleson Union feels like home; like a family. I have been welcomed and embraced by this community. There is a spirit of collaboration that seems to exist in this area. For example, recently through School Connect and Christ Church of the Valley, we had an opportunity to beautify the campus of Tolleson Union High School as part of “Love our Schools” day by having 60 plus volunteers come out on a Saturday to power wash the sidewalks, plant trees and shrubs, pull weeds, organize storage closets, do some light painting, and generally sprucing up the campus. We didn’t have to go out looking for these volunteers. They came looking for us. That’s what makes this community so special.

We are seeing some exciting things happen in this district. A young, beautiful Hollywood actress, Diane Guerrero, came out to visit the students at Copper Canyon High School to encourage seniors to register to vote and do their civic duty. The message was well-received by our students, who are just a semester or so away from branching out in the world and becoming adults themselves, perhaps going on to colleges or universities, or following a trade to use their experience in Career and Technical Education (CTE), which is one of the many things we pride ourselves in the Tolleson Union High School District.

Good things are happening, and have always been happening, in our district. The difference is that now we are telling our story. For example, take the marching band student from TUHS who has been selected to represent the entire state of Arizona to play clarinet in the All-American Marching Band as part of the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade. We have great students doing great things.

Finally, just a friendly reminder that on November 8, 2016, there will be an important election as the Tolleson Union High School District goes out for a budget override. That said, here are some facts that you should know about this election. If passed, the funds will be used to continue funding support for students taking honors and AP classes; intervention for students who need additional support; dual enrollment opportunities which allow students to gain college credit while still taking classes in high school; and most importantly, my focus as superintendent, to increase student achievement across our district.

Register to vote online, and request an early ballot online as well.
