Message from our Superintendent

Dear TUHSD Community,

We have had a smooth start to the school year, thanks to our students, to their parents that make sure they are prepared and ready for school each day, and to our staff that worked so hard over the summer to hit the ground running teaching bell-to-bell every day. From administrators, teachers, to maintenance people, bus drivers to food service workers, we all received the training we needed over the summer through various workshops and conferences, and we are raring to go!

We have many exciting things happening this year and we know that it will be a year to remember. Most importantly, we want to point out that the Tolleson Union High School District, as well as two of our partner districts, will be going for either override or bond elections. TUHSD specifically, will be going for a bond election. We want to thank the voters who approved our budget override last year. Please review our factual information on our bond election.

There have been many special moments this year already, with many more to come. On August 21, we celebrated the solar eclipse across the district. La Joya held an eclipse lesson for all students right before the eclipse began, had the opportunity to view the eclipse using paper plate projectors, solar eclipse glasses, projection boxes, and view the eclipse via the NASA Webstream. Fox 10 News reported live throughout the morning from La Joya (you can see the broadcasts on our Facebook page). I would like to especially thank Mr. Devin Del Palacio, TUHSD Governing Board Vice President, and a NASA Ambassador, for sharing 250 NASA sunglasses and making the experience truly special for our students. On August 16, we hosted a well-attended parent night at all school sites, and last week our American Dream Academy program through Arizona State University started their fall sessions. We look forward the fall athletic season (cross-country, football, golf, swim/dive, volleyball and cheer), as well as the countless numbers of theater and musical performances that will be taking place throughout this year. Whatever interests our young men and women have, we have a club or organization available to cultivate, nurture, and expand those interests. We are proud to provide all of these great opportunities for our students; however, our continued focus is academic achievement for every student at TUHSD each and every day.

Parents, thank you for choosing TUHSD for your student’s education. We want to work together with you to ensure that your student remains in school, is engaged and challenged, and is ready for their journey in life once they graduate. We are committed to developing the potential of all students.

I would like to share a couple of hidden gems about two former Sierra Linda graduates. We are always extremely proud of our students who go on to higher education, like Donte Deckard, who is now at the University of Arizona studying architecture and was just awarded a $10,000 scholarship from the CRC Foundation. Another gem is Vanessa Contreras Rodriguez who is sharing her family’s journey to this country and the obstacles they had to face on her inspiring blog. We encourage you to read Vanessa’s blog.

If you want to stay informed on everything that is happening in our district or at any of the high schools, connect with us on social media. Follow us on Facebook or on Twitter.

Thank you for your continued support.

TUHSD Do It With Pride!

Sincerely,

Nora Gutierrez
