Message from our Superintendent

Dear TUHSD Community,

Although we are in the final weeks of the 2016-2017 school year, we continue to teach in the classrooms every day to ensure our students end the year successfully.

During the first two weeks of April TUHSD schools took part in AzMERIT testing. Students took assessments in English Language Arts in grades 9, 10 and 11 and Algebra I, Algebra II, and Geometry. The assessments took place over a three-day period with schools taking assessments in writing, reading, and math. The assessments at all sites was a complete success. Over 30,000 assessments were taken at our sites, which is about 6,000 tests per school. Students were confident taking the online assessments because they have been using technology and computers regularly in their classrooms and during practice assessments. Our students were well prepared by their classroom teachers and were provided a quality testing environment to help them focus on the tests and to have the opportunity to show what they have learned throughout the year.

To make this process a success required a total team effort. Our thanks go to the IT Department for their behind-the-scenes preparation and on-site support throughout the process; the Student Information Systems Department, district office staff; and our site administrators, especially the site principals and the curriculum and instruction assistant principals, support staff, and most importantly our amazing, passionate, dedicated teachers who work with the students every day. Thank you to support staff throughout the district for putting in the work prior to testing and the work on the testing days to set our students up for success.

We are very proud of our students and the effort they put into the AzMERIT tests. We have amazing students that take pride in their education and we are anxious to see the results of their fine work. We expect to receive AzMERIT results in June.

Eight Arizona schools made the list of the top 30 schools in the nation, with our own University High School occupying the #21 spot on the list, according to U.S. News & World Report. University High School is #7 in the state. In ranking schools, U.S. News relied on students’ overall performance on state high school proficiency tests, disadvantaged students’ performance on those tests, graduation rate, and then advanced placement test data. All of that served as an effort to adjust available numbers to show how well public high schools are serving all students, not just the high-performing ones. Congratulations to University High for this great accomplishment!

Tolleson Union High School is the recipient of the Division 6A Southwest Region award for sportsmanship. This is such an important recognition as it shows that our students exhibit compassion and high standards of behavior out on the playing field. This is a valuable trait that will serve our students well in the future.

Students are preparing for year-end events like final exams, prom, celebrations, and finalizing their college and career choices. There is much to celebrate as each school hosts their honors, scholarship, and awards ceremonies. We know that we have amazing students that will go on to be successful adults.

Graduations will be on Wednesday, May 24, 2017, at the University of Phoenix Stadium (1 Cardinals Drive, Glendale, Arizona 85305). The schedule is as follows:

    • 11:00 a.m. La Joya Community High School
    • 1:00 p.m. Sierra Linda High School
    • 3:00 p.m. Westview High School
    • 5:00 p.m. Copper Canyon High School
    • 7:00 p.m. Tolleson Union High School/University High School

We start our Summer Academy on May 30.
