Tolleson Union High School District #214

The Tolleson Union High School District, long on history and rich in diversity, is home to more than 8,500 high school students, 460 qualified teachers, 31 administrators including the Superintendent, 20 professional staff members, and a 5-member Governing Board responsible for establishing policies and procedures for district governance.

History

The Tolleson Union High School District was organized on January 24, 1914. Although formed that year, the first high school class of students did not start until 1920 when, situated in a small wooden building divided into two classrooms and a small office inside Pendergast Elementary School, two teachers provided instruction. Students had the opportunity of only obtaining the first two years of a high school education. For the eleventh and twelfth grades, students attended either Glendale Union High School or Phoenix Union High School.

Sometime around 1927, the Maricopa County School Superintendent approved a location change of the school to Tolleson. Named Tolleson Union High School, the original district was approximately seventy square miles with 30 more miles added in 1957. Today, the District encompasses 102.5 square miles with the boundaries running to Glendale on the north, 59th Avenue on the east, Pecos Road on the south, and along the Agua Fria riverbed on the West.

The District is currently comprised of four high schools:

  • Copper Canyon High School, home of the Aztecs;
  • La Joya Community High School, home of the Lobos;
  • Tolleson Union High School, home of the Wolverines; and
  • Westview High School, home of the Knights.
  • Future high schools include:

  • Sierra Linda High School, 3434 South 67th Avenue, Phoenix, a quarter mile south of Lower Buckeye Road, will open to incoming freshman for the 2008-2009 school year.
  • High school #6, located in the vicinity of Dysart and Broadway roads, is anticipated to open in 2010.
