Program Overview
The James A. Green Continuing Education Academy is a year-round program in the Tolleson Union High School District designed to provide an alternative setting for district students who may need learning resources other than those provided at district campuses. Academy students continue to be part of their home campuses (with restrictions) while taking classes at the alternative site. In most cases, they are entitled to all home campus resources and programs including transportation, facilities, and extra-curricular activities.
Enrolling in the Academy requires parental approval and a counselor’s referral after it is determined that the student meets the entrance requirement (CEA Student Profile). Blended scheduling allows students/parents the opportunity to contract for "home study" and/or "Academy-site" study.
Full-time students are expected to perform twenty-five hours of academic activities per week; part-time students are measured by competency-based standards. Students may be full-time at home campuses and take correspondence or extended study classes at the Academy. Attendance is reported weekly to students’ home campuses.
An open-entry/open-exit, individualized/self-paced-study methodology is the learning model with students having the opportunity to gain credit as rapidly as they demonstrate proficiency.
A variety of class offerings provide students the opportunities to continue in the main stream of their learning endeavors. Basic skills, mid-level, and upper-level classes are available with district-approved texts, supplementals, and computer based instruction functioning as the curriculum foundation. All classes are aligned with district requirements and state essential skills.
The Continuing Education Academy is the final choice of outstanding educational opportunities available for Tolleson Union High School District students.
Our hope is that students will experience success allowing them to return to their home campuses as quickly as possible.
