LA JOYA PREVENTION PROGRAMS
La Joya offers prevention programs in order to provide safe places for students to find acceptance and be challenged to take steps to improve their lives.
Peer Counseling/Mediation: This is an elective class where students learn how listen, give support, and resolve conflict between their peers. If you have a problem you can’t solve on your own, you can ask to talk with a peer counselor or peer mediator. See Ms. Griffin in room 1432 or any guidance counselor for more information.
Be the Change: This club is for students who want to be leaders on our campus. We teach leadership development, discuss issues of tolerance and respect for all people, and participate in various activities that impact our campus in a positive way, including attending our District’s annual Ourtown Camp. BTC meets on Tuesdays after school in Mr. Marshall’s room (1121). See Mr. Meza in room 1126 for more information.
Esperanza Mentoring: High School can be tough enough but for students who are also pregnant or parenting, school takes on some very unique challenges. We offer adult mentors to all of our teen parents (girls and guys) in order to offer support, encouragement, and hope. See Ms. Ickes in Guidance for more information.
SUPPORT GROUPS: A support group is a safe place to talk about problems and receive support for concerns you may have in your life. The following are groups that may be provided this year:
Anger Management: For students would like to learn
how to deal with their anger in a healthier way. We meet Thursdays after
school (2-4pm). See Ms. Gordon in Guidance for more information.
Insight: For students who would like to live a
healthy lifestyle without using drugs, alcohol, tobacco, or cutting as a way to
escape their pain. This group is for learning how to get support for the things
in their life that overwhelm them. See Ms. Bellingham in Guidance for
details.
Social – For students who have trouble getting along
with others and keeping friends. We have wo support groups (one for guys and
one for girls) that teach social skills, coping skills, and offer general
support for personal concerns. See Ms. Novak in Room 1413 or Ms. Ickes in
Guidance for more info.
ELL – For our English Language Learners to
discuss the social/emotional concerns faced when moving to a new country. The
group encourages students to also get involved with other campus activities and
clubs. See Mrs. Ferguson in room 1107 for more details.
Abuse/Neglect – For students who are
survivors of physical, sexual, emotional, or verbal abuse or neglect and would
like to begin taking steps toward healing. Students learn how their past
affects their emotions, behavior, and relationships today. Students then begin
to take steps toward healing. See Ms. Ickes in Guidance for more
information.
