English/Reading Department

Welcome to the English/Reading Department

The members of the English/Reading Department are dedicated in providing the skills that Copper Canyon students need to be able to communicate effectively in their school, communities and future endeavors. Students will be given the opportunity to learn and effectively apply various reading strategies, such as comprehending, predicting, interpreting, and evaluating a wide range of literary and informational texts. At each grade level, focus is placed on building vocabulary, enhancing grammar skills, and developing the rhetorical tools needed for each student to be successful beyond their high school experience.

Starting this school year, in order to increase the levels of reading comprenhension, time will be allotted for the students and staff to participate in a silent sustained reading period twice a week. During this time, all students and faculty will be required to focus on reading only.

Writing is a skill that is vital for anyone to succeed in life. Understanding this need, students will be given a wide range of opportunities to learn and develop writing skills to be able to produce the following forms of essays: personal expression, literary analysis, expository, persuasive, functional and informational research. In order to be successful writers, students will learn and effectively utilize the writing process, the Six Trait Rubric, and the Modern Language Association (MLA) format and style of writing.
