*ENGLISH (GRAMMAR, COMPOSITION LITERARY ANALYSIS)
4 YEARS/UNITS
NOTE: Courses such as journalism, business communications, speech and any others not devoted exclusively to the study of English may not be
substituted for an English course.
*MATHEMATICS
4 YEARS/UNITS
Algebra I, II; geometry; any advanced math course for which algebra II prerequisite ‑ pre‑calculus, calculus, analytical geometry.
*LABORATORY SCIENCE (BIOLOGY. CHEMISTRY. PHYSICS. EARTH SCIENCE)
3 YEARS/UNITS
One unit in at least three of the four areas is recommended. Although, an advanced level, e.g. advanced placement (AP) or honor course, to a subject
completed previously can be used for a third unit. (Integrated Laboratory Sciences may be used to substitute for one required course).
*SOCIALSTUIDIES
2 YEARS/UNITS
One year/unit of American History and one year/unit of an additional social science such as geography, government, psychology, anthropology,
European or World History, economics or sociology.
*FOREIGN LANGUAGE
2 YEARS/UNITS
Two units of the same foreign language; a third year is recommend. Sign language may be used to fulfill this requirement.
*FINE ARTS
I YEAR/UNIT
One unit in fine arts or any combination of two semesters of fine art courses. Fine Arts courses are defined as those that provide opportunity to gain
experience and knowledge in production and performance; analysis, interpretation and evaluation; historical and cultural aspects of the visual and
performing arts. Courses must combine theory and practice and include critical thinking skills.
*ART Introduction to arts, art appreciation, art history, art therapy, art design (three dimensional), drawing, painting, ceramics, sculpture, studio art, life drawing, printmaking, museum studies, photography, art production, art careers and gallery management, graphic design, jewelry
*DANCE Ballet, modern dance, dance performance, dance history, choreography and production, jazz dance, ethnic dance, dance improvisation.
*MUSIC Music appreciation, music history, band (beginning, advanced, marching), jazz ensemble, percussion ensemble, orchestra,
choir (beginning, concert) voice, music theory/harmony, instrument training (guitar, strings, winds, piano) glee club, vocal ensemble, music laboratory.
*THEATRE/DRAMA Drama, acting, directing, theatre arts, history of theatre, dramatic productions, stagecraft, costume design, and other
technical theatre classes.
*Course applicability to competency requirements will be considered on a case‑by‑case basis.

EXTRA CURRICULAR AND CO‑CURRICULAR STANDARDS POLICY
Tolleson Union High School District has a co‑curricular standards policy for its students. If you are interested in participating in any sport or organization, please obtain a copy from the Administration Office at Tolleson Union, Westview, La Joya Community, or Copper Canyon.
GRADUATION REQUIREMENTS:
English or English as a second language 4.0 units
Math (Algebra and Geometry must be taken at a minimum) 2.0 units
Science 2.0 units
United States and Arizona Government .5 unit
World History/Geography 1.0 unit
United States/Arizona History and Geography 1.0 unit
Wellness or R.O.T.C. 1.0 unit

ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS
The graduating class of 2006 must meet or exceed the Reading, Writing, and Math standards on the State Adopted AIMS Test.
GUIDELINES FOR COMPLETION OF GRADUATION REQUIREMENTS
1) Students may elect to return for another year or semester if requirements are not met for graduation. A student may pre-register for classes if it is apparent that requirements will not be met.
2) A student may take summer school or night classes from an accredited institution.
3) A student may enroll at the James E. Green Continuing Education Academy
4) A student may elect to take correspondence classes. Permission from the Guidance Department and administration must be obtained so as to ascertain which course(s) could be taken to fulfill graduation requirements.
5) Tolleson Union High School District will accept credit(s) for completion of requirements from a community college provided dual credit forms are signed by the counselor, college liaison officer, and the administration prior to taking class (es).
6) Tolleson Union High School District will award a diploma to a student who completes graduation requirements through correspondence, night school, and summer school or through the Dual Credit Program ONLY IF Tolleson Union High School District was the last district attended.
7) It is the responsibility of each student to inform the Guidance Department of intention to complete requirements for graduation (see #3) for the purpose of participation in graduation ceremonies, etc. Arrangements should be made with the registrar to pick up diplomas when requirements are completed.
8) Students who desire to graduate in LESS THAN FOUR YEARS must petition the administration at least one term prior to completing the requirements necessary for graduation.
GRADUATION REQUIREMENTS
(Determining Competency for Graduation Credit)
Determination and verification of student accomplishment of subject-area course requirements and/or competencies for graduation credit shall be the responsibility of a subject-area teacher, department chair and director of the specific curriucular area and, at a minimum, shall be in accord with the following:
· The student shall have successfully completed the subject-area course requirements incorporating the essential skills and competencies from the course of study adopted by the Governing Board in accord with the District-adopted grading system; or
· As an alternative to completing the course requirements, a student may request, upon a showing of familiarity with the subject matter of the course, an examination on the competencies of the course. The student may take an examination on a particular course at any prescribed time each academic year. The examination shall be prepared by a teacher of the subject matter who is designated by the Superintendent, or it may be the District criterion-referenced test for the specific subject. To receive graduation credit, the student must demonstrate accomplishment of the essential skills and competencies adopted by the State Board of Education and the Governing Board. Demonstration of accomplishment of the skills and competencies shall be determined in accord with accepted practices in evaluation of students. A copy of the test results, verified by the appointed teacher, shall be filed with the student’s records.

FOREIGN EXCHANGE STUDENT POLICY
Tolleson Union High School District supports and encourages its’ students to broaden their educational experience and cultural awareness by participating in a foreign exchange program. To ensure quality and continuity in a student's academic growth, the following rules and procedures will apply to all foreign exchange program participants:
1) The foreign exchange program must be recognized and approved by the Arizona Department of Education.
2) The student must obtain recommendation from his/her counselor and permission from the Principal.
3) The student's grade point average is not affected by participation in a foreign exchange program.
4) The student's class rank will be reinstated upon re‑enrollment at Tolleson Union High School, Westview High School, La Joya Community High School., or Copper Canyon High School. During the period the student is participating in the foreign exchange program, he/she will be acknowledged for the purposes of college scholarships as being in the top five (5) or ten (10) percent of his/her class only, providing his/her class rank at the time of entering the foreign exchange program qualifies him/her for such recognition.

The Arizona Board of Regents, which is the governing body for the three state universities, has established a more detailed list of entrance requirements for their schools. A copy of these requirements is available in the T.U.H.S., W.H.S., L.J.C.H.S. or C.C. Guidance Office.
COURSE PLACEMENT, TRANSFER AND
WITHDRAWAL POLICY
PLACEMENT
1. Each Department will devise appropriate criteria for the identification and placement of entering students into classes within the department. These criteria are subject to review and approval by the Assistant Principal for Curriculum and Instruction.
2. Students currently enrolled may be recommended for placement into an "A" level (accelerated) class or a readiness program by any of their regular classroom teachers or counselor through normal test results and subject to approval by the appropriate department chairperson and the Assistant Principal for Curriculum and Instruction.
